St Helena is an island with a great passion for football. Currently, there are 6 teams who battle it out in the SHFA Premier League and the knockout competitions. The SHFA runs Junior leagues throughout the football season which runs from June – December.
All football is played on Francis Plain and games are well attended by the community, and the SHFA is committed to ensuring grassroots football continues to flourish on the island.
St Helena is a remote island of 4,000 people in the Atlantic Ocean. The isolation means that equipment such as kits, footballs, and goal nets need to be ordered from England. It has also resulted in generations of the island’s best football players never having the chance to play abroad. The opening of an airport in 2017 has allowed St Helena to compete in the 2019 and 2023 Island Games. It is hoped that more of the island’s best footballers will have the chance to represent St Helena abroad in the future.
The St Helena Football Association is not currently affiliated with any other governing body. The promotion and development of football on St Helena is an important part of the SHFA’s function, who continue to seek partnerships and opportunities to grow the game on St Helena. Travelling to international tournaments is also a great chance to promote the island and its unique culture.
